Located in the south-east of France north of the border to Provence it neighbours both Italy and Switzerland to the east. It has arguably the most spectacular scenery in France around the Savoie and Haut-Savoie departments; possessing part of the incredible Alps Mountain range which rises gradually from Lake Geneva and reaches their highest point at the snowy peaks of Mont Blanc. The lakes, glaciers and mountains are just as enjoyable during the winter where skiing is their main use, as during the summer when hiking through the green and colourful countryside becomes possible. Yet there’s more: vineyards, wine tasting and Roman architecture are found in the west of the region as is more cycling and walking territory amongst the forests, cliffs, gorges and tributaries in the Ardeche department.
In the Rhone valley in the west sits the large city of Lyon. The second largest city in France it has not only the expected industry and business but some of the best gastronomic restaurants in France. Great nightlife, festivals and antique markets coupled with its international schools and good transport links make Lyon a promising location to buy a new home. Between Vienne and Valence further south are some of the most celebrated vineyards in France and once past Valence the warmer climate welcomes you to the south (the midi).
Southern Rhone-alps like its neighbouring region of Provence-Alps-Cote-d’Azur has many colourful market towns, Lavender fields, vineyards and includes the village of Richeranche- the trading capital for truffles. The region is also very rich in fruit farms, strongly scented wild herbs and wild boar and game and also an abundance of rivers for fishing and water sports.
If you travel eastwards towards the Alps, the first city you reach is Grenoble- a lively and cultural modern city with no less than four universities, an international airport and surrounded by mountains. North-east of here are the real beginnings of the Alps with Chambery, a bustling provincial town marking its entrance and the Spa town of Aix-les-Bains nearby. The popular and beautiful resort of Annecy lies further north, next to which is the ever impressive Mont Blanc which is one of the main attractions to tourists in the Alps. Chamonix Mont Blanc is its base camp of which Chamonix itself with its boutiques and restaurants offers some fantastic skiing.
Val d’Isere and Tignes are linked by chairlifts and together have 100 lifts and runs which start from as high up as 3200m, forming a very popular ski area. North, towards Lake Geneva the increasingly popular ski area of Portes-du-Soleil is based, encompassing Morzine and Avoriaz and making up a massive ski area with the Swiss resorts. West of the Italian border Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens make up the well-known, more British influenced ski region of “Les Trois Vallees- the worlds largest ski area. Other ski areas include Les Arcs, Flaine, La Plagne, La Clusaz and Megeve. For more information on the different ski areas of France click Ski property for sale in the French Alps
