Besançon
Located in the Doubs department, this is an ancient city which forms the capital of the Franche-Comte region and sits on the Northern side of the Jura Mountains meaning it is not far away from skiing during the winter and fabulous hiking during the summer. The location of the city is very old as it begun as a Gallo-Roman city and hence has had a number of influences initially as Spanish settlement, then a clock making centre and home to the creation of artificial silk. Some exquisite architecture can be found in Besancon especially along the banks of the canal and its port filled with pleasure boats and floating restaurants.
