Picardie
Picardie is located in northern France bordering Pas-de-Calais in the north, Normandy to the west, Ile-de-France in the south and Champagne-Ardennes in the east. Despite its battle-scarred history this region is a tranquil get away famous for its horse-racing and stud farms at Chantilly. For anyone who enjoys fishing, sailing and other water-sports this region is ideal with networks of rivers and canals. Its peaceful shores, agricultural plains and forests cater for walkers and horse riders alike and with some fantastic golf courses dotted around there is something for everyone.
South of the fishing Hamlets around the Somme estuary lies Amiens; well known for the largest Gothic cathedral in France- the “Cathedrale Notre-Dame” north of which a network of canals flow through the renovated medieval quarter. Market gardens surround the fertile area around the Somme and the residents use the canal network to bring fresh produce to Amiens for the Saturday market. More Gothic cathedrals dominate the towns of Laon, Soissons and Noyon in the east of Picardie set amid green, wooded hills. Meanwhile if you head south the majestic royal palace at Compeigne welcomes you surrounded by the ancient “Foret de Compiegne”.
