Nièvre
Nièvre is located in central France and is part of the current region of Burgundy. It is surrounded by the departments of Yonne, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, Allier, Cher, and Loiret and belongs partly to the basin of the Loire and partly to that of the Seine.
The Nivernais and Charolais are the chief breeds of cattle and the rearing of sheep and draught-horses is also of importance. Vines are grown in the valley of the Loire and in the neighborhood of Clamecy and the white wines of Pouilly sur Loire- (a pretty river town) are widely known. The forests of the little granite mountain of the Morvan are scattered with lakes and rivers and is a paradise for fishermen and sailing enthusiasts. Landscapes around the Nivernais canal and the central Nivernais is full of culture and tradition.
There are manufacturers of agricultural implements and hardware, potteries, manufacturers of porcelain, and faience (at Nevers), tile-works, chemical works, paper-mills and saw-mills, as well as numerous tanneries, boot and shoe factories, cask manufactories and oil works (colza, poppy and hemp)
Nevers is the capital of Nievre and is a quiet and pleasant provincial town located at the western edge of the region on the banks of the Loire. It is enjoyable to visit the Ducal palace built in Renaissance (as the Loire Chateaux), the Eglise St Etienne and the St Cyr Cathedral.
