Vienne
Vienne is located in the Poitou-Charentes region and its bordering departments are Charente, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire, Deux-Sèvres and Haute-Vienne and it is named after the River Vienne that passes through the department.
The landscape is characterized by gently undulating hills and sleepy villages where Cheese making is an important industry.
Poitiers is the capital of the department located in the north-east of the Poitou-Charentes and occupies a prime position on the River Clan not far away from where it converges with the Vienne at Chatellerault. The town has a rich and pleasant architectural heritage with an historic centre, churches (Notre-Dame-la-Grande) and elegantly manicured gardens in the Parc de Blossac. Poitiers has been important in French history where several important battles took place including the decisive battle between Frankish forces and Arab invaders in 732. The battle, which lasted for a week, saw the Arabs defeated and so prevented the Muslem army from conquering Western Europe in 732.
The town is famous for the theme park of Futuroscope. Here all the best attractions are image based, with various devices such as seats mounted on hydraulics which move in tandem with the screen action to draw you into the experience.
The towns of Chauvigny, Angles sur l'Anglin and St-Savin are also worth visiting. In Chauvigny you can find its Eglise St-Pierre and the five ruined medieval castles which hint at its importance when it was the property of the bishops of Poitiers.
