Arcachon
Arcachon is located on the Atlantic coast of France in the Gironde department of Aquitaine. Only 150 years old Archachon was originally populated by just 400 peasants and fisherman who took advantage of its superb sandy beaches and expansive pine forest. Today however it has become a hot bed of tourist activity and is one of the most sought after seaside resorts in France. Its beach is nearly 3km long and boasts the largest sand dune in Europe reaching a record height of 105 metres! Dotted around are lots of small fishing villages and bird colonies making for a very pleasant place to come and stay. Surrounding Arcachon are five fabulous lakes: Hourtin-Carcans- the largest lake of France for lovers of nature and sports, Lacanau- the incomparable charm of a protected lake, Cazaux- which if you love sailing this is the place to go, Cousseau lake- a nature reserve, The lagoon of Contaut- a unique swamp area.
