Situated in the north of the Rhone-Alps region, the Ain department is one full of contrasting landscapes and many small, pretty villages. Divided by the River Ain which cuts through the department, the countryside is made up of fertile plains to the west where you can find various vineyards producing Chirouble, Fleurie and Juliannas wines and the beginnings of the rugged Jura Mountains to the east which is ideal for hiking and exploration reaching a height of over 1700m at its highest. The prefecture is Bourg-en-Bresse and its population is 512,000. The department was formed during the French revolution of 1790 and the area used to be part of the Ancient kingdom of Burgundy until in 1601 when it was handed over to the French.
