Located 32.5 km (20.19 mi) from Nîmes and 26 km (16.16 mi) from Montpellier, Aigues-Mortes is a town in the Gard department and the Languedoc Roussillon region. Aigues-Mortes is famous for the well-preserved city walls surrounding the city. Its name comes from aquae mortuae, the “dead waters” of the surrounding saline delta marshland. The town was built in the 13th century as a port, but access to the sea was via a canal dug through the ponds and marshes of the Camargue. The principal industry is the extraction and processing of marsh salt. Tourism plays a large part of the town's economy, wine, asparagus and sea salt are also important staples. In the surrounding countryside, bulls and Camargue horses are bred. The current population of Aigues-Mortes stands at around 6,000 people and this wonderful French village lays just 5kms from the fantastic beaches at Port Camargue.
