Information on Charente and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties
Charente is a department in central western France which was created in 1790 and has a population of 340,000. Its capital is Angouleme and forms part of the region Poitou-Charente surrounded by the departments of Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Dordogne, Gironde, Charente-Maritime, and Deux-Sèvres.
Charente as its name indicates, sits mainly to the basin of the River Charente where the climate is temperate but moist, making it ideal for the agriculture upon which this department depends.
Agriculturally therefore, Charente is prosperous, relying on both arable (arable land making up more than half of Charente’s surface) and dairy farming for its income, yet the vine is also predominant in the department of Charente. The wine produced is chiefly distilled into the famous brandy to which the town of Cognac gets its name-Cognac and Pineau are two of the major agricultural products.
The countryside is undulating and hilly with many thick forests in the north and becomes more mountainous in the north east towards Limousin.
