Haute-Loire is part of the current région of Auvergne and is surrounded by the departments of Loire, Ardèche, Lozère, Cantal, and Puy-de-Dôme covering an area of about 4,977 km2 with around 206,600 inhabitants.
The climate, owing to the altitude, the northward direction of the valleys, and the winds from the Cevennes tends to be cold and the winters long and rigorous where storms and violent rains are frequent. Cereals, chiefly rye, oats, barley and wheat, are cultivated in the lowlands and on the plateaus, on which aromatic and medicinal plants are abundant. Lentils, peas, and other forage and potatoes are also grown.
Le Puy-en-Velay is the capital of the department. It is also known as one of the wonders of medieval France. The nickname of the city is Black Madonna, because of many statues of Virgin Mary carved in dark walnut or cedar. The city attracts lots of pilgrims.

Brioude is a quiet and provincial town but also one of the most important towns in the department and is known to have one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Auvergne which is the basilica of St Julien. There is also the lace museum which is worth going to and many typical old houses which may be of interest and fountains by which to relax.
