Information on Lozère and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties

Lozère is located in the southeast of France near the Massif Central and is part of the current Languedoc-Roussillon région surrounded by the departments of Cantal, Haute-Loire, Ardèche, Gard, and Aveyron. Legend has it that the Beast of Gévaudan was a creature that terrorized the general area of the former province of Gévaudan, in today's Lozère, around the Margeride Mountains from 1764 to 1767. Lozere is mountainous throughout and its average elevation is the highest of all the French departments. Economically, the department has one of the lowest unemployment rates in France and is the least populated of all the French departments.

The climate of Lozere varies greatly with the locality; for instance at Cevennes the climate becomes mild enough at their base to permit the growth of the olive during the summer while winters are very cold and Rain can fall in violent storms, causing disastrous floods. On the Mediterranean versant, sheep and cattle-rearing and cheesemaking are the chief occupations while large quantities of chestnuts are exported from the Cevennes.

The village of Florac and the département capital of Mende are the two main bases in Lozère. Florac lies in the bottom of the Tarnon valley, and its château with its 17th century keep is the head office of the Cévennes National Park; a tiny place with just over 2,000 residents but attracts many more on Saturdays for the weekly market. Mende is at the northern tip of the Cévennes Park. Here the Notre Dame et Saint Privat cathedral begun by Pope Urbain V contain 16th century towers. The tiny préfecture also has a 13th century synagogue and a museum of religious art. Source:
