Champagne-Ardenne
Situated in the north-east of France, east of Paris, the Champagne-Ardenne region borders Belgium, in the north, Lorraine in the east, Burgundy in the south and Ile de France to the west. The region is famous for its sparkling wine (of which only some areas are allowed to call their product champagne) which is produced in the south around Reims, Epernay and Troyes amongst their rolling prairies. North of this area the land becomes chalky and flat and during the winter can get cold, wet and windy. Towards the border with Belgium rugged forest covers the landscape and cannot support agriculture like the south.
In Reims the well known Cathedrale de Reims can be found (where French monarchs held their coronation) along with its champagne houses. Troyes, the ancient capital of Champagne with its Gothic cathedral and churches mixed in with its high narrow streets and half-timbered houses makes its visitors feel like they have been thrown into a Tudor period Drama and is well worth considering as a place to buy. Meanwhile the twin towns of Charleville and Mezieres in the North allow good access to the Ardennes which is a spectacular though rugged territory.
