This department is located in the region of Poitou-Charentes and is bordered by the departments of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Maine-et-Loire, Vendée and Vienne.
The climate in Deux-Sevres is mild where wheat and oats are the main cereals with Colza, hemp, rape and flax also cultivated Considerable quantities of beetroot are grown to supply the distilleries of Melle. Numerous vineyards are located in the neighbourhood of Bressuire in the north.
Niort (the capital), Bressuire, Melle, Parthenay, St Maixent, Thouars and Oiron are the principal towns in the Deux-Sevres.
Niort is located on the south-west of the department, on the Sevre Niortaise river side, close to Vendee. It is a medieval town with a port which used to be important in medieval times but nowadays the river is a lot more peaceful. The city has a good selection of provincial restaurants serving good regional specialities and is served by two international airports (La Rochelle and Poiters), which are a short distance away. Insurance companies employ more than half the population of Niort which as a result is very prosperous.
Parthenay is a sous-prefecture of Deux-Sevres with a beautiful medieval centre through which to stroll. From the upper fortified town you can get good views across the surrounding countryside.
