Ille-et-Vilaine is a part of the modern region of Brittany and is surrounded by the departments of Manche, Mayenne, Maine-et-Loire, Loire-Atlantique, Morbihan, and Côtes-d'Armor, as well as the English Channel to the north. Created during the French Revolution, the area is around 6,775 km2 and the population is about 903,500 inhabitants.
The climate is temperate, humid and free from sudden changes and agriculturally, all kinds of cereals are grown but the principal ones are wheat, buckwheat, oats and barley. Potatoes, early vegetables, flax and hemp are also largely grown, and tobacco is cultivated in the arrondissement of St Malo. Pears and apples are the principal fruits grown and cheese is also important as is the famous butter of Rennes. Fishing plays a part in the local industry where the chief ports are St Malo and St Servan.
Rennes is the capital and an industrial centre famous for the construction of Citroën cars but the old centre is elegant and dates from the 18th century, attracts lots of tourists to its ramparts (Les Portes Mordelaises from the 15th century) and its St Pierre Cathedral although parts of the town were rebuilt after being almost destroyed by fire. The modern city, with its hotels and neon lights, lies on the other side of the river Rance.
Rennes is also famous for its festivals of music: medieval, baroque and Celtic but it is considered as a rock capital thanks to a large student population which create a lively nightlife. Source: paysages-ille-et-vilaine.fr
