Pyrenees-Atlantiques is a department in the southwest of France in the Aquitaine region which takes its name from the Pyrenees mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by the Landes, Hautes-Pyrénées and Gers departments.
Both the Gascon language and the Basque language are indigenous and the parts of the department that were part of Guyenne and Béarn have a culture heavily influenced by the Basques. The inhabitants consider themselves as Basques before French with culture and cuisine characterised by an abundant use of red peppers.
The department has one of the most diversified landscapes of France with ski resorts on the Pyrenees but also seaside resorts such as Biarritz, on the Atlantic coast. The capital of Pyrenees Atlantiques is Pau and is the inland largest city in the region. It is touristy, and it has a very impressive architectural and cultural heritage; for instance a chateau from the 12th century and the Musée des Beaux Arts has works by Degas and Rubens. It had the first golf courses on the Continent from where the snowy peaks of the Pyrénées are visible. Rugby was also introduced here by the English as was fox hunting.
Biarritz is famous for its wonderful beaches and is one of the best places for surfing around Europe. It is a touristy city for English, French and Germans but also with the Spanish but there are still lots of places to discover. Nearby is less touristy Bayonne, famous for its ham it also has an interesting museum- the Musee Bonnat with works of Goya and Ruben. Also whilst walking through the narrow streets in this city fortified by stout medieval walls a 13th century cathedral awaits. Also on the coast is St Jean de Luz which is a pleasant area in which to buy property. Most people moved once Biarritz became too crowded and is a place where Louis XIV used to visit and married his Spanish wife. Source: lowpressure.co.uk
